JBC 2015 4th of July Metric Century Recap 07/05/15

Thanks to all of the volunteers that helped make JBC’s 2015 4th of July event a great success.   We had a perfect day for our ride, sunny, warm temperatures, and low winds that all contributed to what could be record breaking attendance. Initial rider count is about 1,100, with just under 40% pre-registered. The large number of pre-registered riders helped the volunteers at registration keep the lines short.

Special Thanks to:

Our vendors – who are fantastic to work with, and provide a great product or service.

  • Channahon General Rental: They set up the tent at the Platteville Rest Stop.
  • Culver’s: Provided Ice Cream in the Registration area for riders to enjoy at the end of the ride.
  • Fast Print of Joliet: All our printing needs – maps, route sheets, forms, and the road signs.
  • Great American Bagel: Bagels and Cream Cheese
  • JBC Members: Built the new Picnic Tables at the Platteville Rest Stop. The Tables were donated to Platteville in the spring of 2015.
  • Milano’s Bakery: The Awesome Bread
  • Peter Rubi Produce: Watermelons, grapes, bananas, oranges, and plums.
  • Plainfield South High School, the village of Platteville, and the city of Morris for the use of their facilities for registration, and rest stops locations.
  • Thrush Sanitation: Porta Potties
  • Water Transport of Joliet: Anyone see a water truck at Platteville? We didn’t run out!
  • Bike repair stations were staffed by two local bike shops – Sumbaum at registration, and Trek of Naperville at Platteville.
  • Local Police – Helped keep our riders Safe.

And… Thanks to the riders who came out for an awesome day of riding. Hope to see you all back again next year.

Platteville Picnic Tables, 2015

Back in late 2014, JBC started working with the city of Platteville to receive approval to donate a number of picnic tables the city for use at Pletcher Park. JBC has used the park for a number of years as a rest stop location during our annual 4th Metric Century Ride. The tables were delivered on Thu, April 23rd, just in time for the Platteville residents to enjoy during their baseball season, and well in time for the 4th ride.

The tables were a donation to the city, with the material being purchased with funds generated from 4th Ride rider fees, and JBC members providing the labor to construct and deliver the tables. After sending a notice to JBC members, we received multiple replies for “Picnic Table Builders”, but 4 – 5 members seemed to be the “right” amount to get the tables built. Gary Meyer, Conrad Brower, Bob Kehoe, and Dominck Chellino were all able to help out with the picnic table building.

With the wood being pre-cut a couple of days before, were able to assemble the tables in 4 – 5 hours. Construction went well, we all found a task to do, and ended up with an efficient “Assembly Line”. Would have taken much longer, but Conrad was relentless in keeping us all working. The final step, according to the plans, was to test the tables. Pizza and beverages were served, and the tables worked out great.

For years to come, the residence of Platteville, JBC’ers, and the 4th riders will enjoy the tables. We had a great time building the tables, and hope to have more of these type of “Value Added” projects for the communities we ride through. Thanks to the JBC members who helped construct the tables. JBC would also like to thank the 4th riders who’s continued support of our annual Metric Century help make these type pf projects possible.

Online registration now open at Active.com through 7/2/2015 at 10:00 pm

Come and join us for our annual ride through Kendall and Grundy Counties, southwest of Plainfield, IL on Saturday July 4th, 2015. There are three routes: 30, 45 and 62 miles. Each will offer marked routes with low traffic and light hills through farm and rural settings. There will be breaks along the way, at our strategically placed rest stops, to refuel, refresh, and chow down on bagels, sandwiches, fruit, cookies and energy drinks.

Safety

The safety of ride participants is of primary importance. Routes are on public roads and must be shared with motor vehicles. We recommend all riders wear helmets, ride no more than two abreast, and obey all traffic laws. We believe bicyclists deserve to share the road, showing courtesy to motorists and other riders. Please exit roadway at rest stops.

All riders aged seventeen and under must be accompanied and supervised by an adult throughout the ride.

SAG vehicles will be patrolling all routes. While Sags will stop to help those in need, priority is given to those with justifiable emergencies—riders with irreparable breakdowns, illness or injury. A flat tire is not considered an emergency. All riders should carry a spare tube, pump and water.

All riders must be off the road by 4:00 PM, so please, don’t take too many breaks and plan accordingly!
